USES/SOURCES: | As a chemical intermediate in synthesis of acetic acid, pentaerythritol, and pyridine; in the production of perfumes, polyester resins, and dyes; as a food preservative and flavoring agent. |
TOXICOLOGY: | Acetaldehyde is an irritant of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract; at high concentrations, it causes narcosis; it is carcinogenic in experimental animals. Nausea, loss of consciousness, and pulmonary edema have been reported with heavy exposure. |
