Why You Need A Noise Dosimeter

The word “noise” is derived from the Latin “nausea” “disgust, annoyance discomfort” and is described as an unwanted sound.  Noise pollution is becoming a major problem not only in Australia but globally.

A noise dosimeter is worn by an employee attached either to their clothing or to their belt with a microphone placed on their shoulder (as close to the ears as possible). The noise dosimeter will be turned on for the duration of the employee’s working day and will monitor the amount of sound that they are exposed to over that time.  A noise dosimeter have a rechargeable battery pack or run from conventional AA batteries.

Traumatic hearing loss can sometimes be caused by a a single exposure to extreme noise (over 140 decibels).  This exposure can result in immediate and permanent effects.  The extent of damage to the person is determined by key factors such as :  sound level, frequency of the sound, duration of the person’s exposure and their vulnerability. 

As our duration or period of exposure to a harmful sound increases, the more likely we are to suffer hearing damage.  In Australia, the most significant single cause of hearing loss is exposure to loud sounds. 

It is important when measuring our exposure to sound, that we also include our leisure activities at home as well as the workplace.  Lawnmowers, crying babies, car stereos and the handyman with his mitre saw are capable of producing noise above 85dB with a potential to damage your hearing.
