Sound Level Meters
Sound level meters are instruments used to measure acoustic sound traveling through the air. They are commonly employed in noise pollution studies to quantify various types of noise, including industrial, environmental, and aircraft noise. AES offers a wide range of sound monitoring instruments, categorised into two types: Type 1 SLM and Type 2 SLM.
Sound level meters are most commonly configured as a hand-held instrument with a microphone to capture noise. The noise is evaluated within the sound meter and acoustic measurement values are displayed on the screen. An important attribute to consider when choosing a suitable sound meter is its type or class. The type or class defines the instrument’s accuracy as per International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) guidelines.
For noise monitoring in basic industrial, commercial, educational, recreational or residential applications, a Type 2 meter will suffice. For precision-grade assessments (often performed in a laboratory), a Type 1 meter is primarily used.
